I had to start with the one location that is closest to my heart. We live close to Redwood Regional Park and I’m lucky enough to hike with my two dogs there most days. The entrance to the park from the Chabot Space and Science Center or Roberts Park are great options, and easy for little ones.
Mount Diablo Foothills
We are so lucky to have the rustic beauty of the Mount Diablo open spaces so close to us. Tucked just off Highway 13 past Montclair Village, Joaquin Miller Park is one of Oakland’s best-kept secrets for family portraits — and one of my personal favorites. The park offers a beautiful mix of redwood groves, open meadows, and eucalyptus-lined trails that give you real variety within a single session. I love it for families who want that lush, forested feel without venturing too far from the East Bay. It’s accessible and manageable for all ages — wide, gentle paths mean even little ones can walk comfortably, and there’s enough open space that energetic kids can move around freely between shots. Parking is easy off Joaquin Miller Road, and the light filtering through the tree canopy is gorgeous in the late afternoon. Piedmont Park – Oakland/Piedmont
If you want beautiful portraits without any logistical stress, Piedmont Park delivers every time. It’s one of those locations that just works — manicured lawns, a canopy of mature redwoods, and a spectacular old oak that families love to sit under and gather around. The park is compact and easy to navigate, with ample street parking right on Linda Avenue and flat, stroller-friendly paths throughout. There are no long walks to the good spots — you step out of the car and you’re already there. I recommend it especially for families with babies, toddlers, or anyone who needs an easy, relaxed experience. The intimate scale also means we’re not competing with crowds. Spring and fall are stunning here, but honestly the redwood canopy keeps the light soft and beautiful year-round.

Not every family portrait needs a park or a field — and if Oakland is your city, downtown deserves to be in your gallery. I love shooting urban family sessions in downtown Oakland because the architecture, murals, and street energy give images a completely different feel: vibrant, real, and full of personality. It’s especially great for families with older kids and teenagers who might roll their eyes at a wildflower field but genuinely light up in a setting that reflects where they actually live. The park offers everything from open meadows and eucalyptus groves to the charming Little Farm area where kids can visit the animals before or after their session. The light in the meadows during late afternoon is soft and luminous, especially in spring and fall. You cannot live in the Bay Area and not have at least one set of family portraits at the water’s edge with the Golden Gate Bridge behind you. What is the best time of year for family photos in the Bay Area? Spring and fall are my two favorite seasons for outdoor family portraits in the Bay Area. Spring — roughly March through May — brings wildflowers, lush green hills, and beautiful soft light. Fall offers warm golden tones, less fog than summer, and comfortable temperatures across the region. That said, the Bay Area’s mild climate means we can create beautiful portraits year-round. Winter sessions in the redwoods have their own moody, magical quality, and late summer at the beach is hard to beat.
What time of day is best for outdoor family portraits? Golden hour — the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset — is when the light is warmest, softest, and most flattering for portraits. I schedule almost all of my outdoor family sessions during this window. Early morning sessions are a wonderful alternative for families with young children who are at their best before nap time, and the light in the first hour after sunrise is just as beautiful as golden hour.
What should my family wear for our portrait session? The locations on this list are all naturally stunning, so I recommend letting the setting guide your wardrobe choices. Soft, coordinated colors that complement the landscape — earthy tones, soft blues, warm neutrals, creams — tend to photograph beautifully. Avoid busy patterns and matching outfits head-to-toe, which can look stiff. How long does a family portrait session take? Most family sessions run between 60 and 90 minutes. That’s enough time to warm up, capture a variety of locations and groupings within the park, and get genuine candid moments alongside the posed portraits. Families with very young children or babies sometimes prefer a shorter 45-minute session — just let me know and we’ll plan accordingly.
Do you travel to locations outside the East Bay? Yes — I regularly photograph family sessions throughout the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Marin, the Peninsula, and beyond. Locations like Baker Beach, Crissy Field, the Marin Headlands, Filoli in Woodside, and Half Moon Bay are all well within my regular shooting range. Travel fees may apply for locations significantly outside the East Bay — just ask when you reach out and I’ll let you know.
How far in advance should I book my family session? I recommend booking at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance, and earlier if you have a specific date or location in mind. Spring and fall are my busiest seasons and tend to fill up quickly — especially golden hour slots on weekends. Holiday portrait sessions in October and November book up fastest of all, so if you’re thinking about holiday cards, reach out as early as September.
What happens if it rains on our session day? A little overcast sky is actually wonderful for portraits — soft, diffused light with no harsh shadows. If we’re facing genuine rain, I’ll work with you to reschedule at no extra charge. I monitor the forecast closely in the days leading up to your session and will always communicate early if I think we need to make a call.
Do you photograph families with newborns or very young babies? Absolutely. I specialize in newborn, maternity, and family photography, so little ones are very much my wheelhouse. For outdoor sessions with newborns I generally recommend waiting until baby is at least 2 to 3 weeks old and the weather is reliably mild.
