Maternity photos are a great way to document the special time of pregnancy and show off your baby bump. Whether you love a flowy, organic feel in a grassy field or a sophisticated flare in San Francisco, the following tips are a great way to start your maternity portrait journey.

Before your session, I recommend deciding on what photography style makes your heart skip a beat. My style is natural, candid, and documentary. Other photographers may have a studio, or work in a traditional or glamor style. Make sure to do your research and find a professional family photographer who makes you feel comfortable and offers guidance to help you capture this special moment.

After your book your photographer, start looking for a rockin’ outfit. You want to feel confident and beautiful in your maternity photos so take some time to play with ideas. Choose clothing that flatters your figure while still showing off the baby bump. Avoid busy patterns and bright colors, as they can be distracting in photos. My favorite silhouette is a maxi dress. Tight on the top with a long flowy bottom. It’s flattering for all bodies and adds dimension and movement to the photos.

When planning your look, consider adding accessories. Accessories can add some fun elements to your photos, such as a bouquet, a cute hat or headband, a floral crown, or a special item that is meaningful to you. Feel free to bring along any items you would like to incorporate in your photos, like sonogram images or baby shoes

For a memorable experience, choose a location in the San Francisco Bay Area you find absolutely beautiful for your maternity photos. Clients in Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and the greater East Bay love the redwoods and the dramatic open fields of Mount Diablo. Couples in San Francisco often will head to Baker Beach, the Presidio, or Land’s End for epic views and lasting memories. In Marin, the Headlands, Tennessee Valley and Cavallo Point are incredible options. Folks in San Jose and Palo Alto take the day off to visit Half Moon Bay, Henry Cowell State Park and even Santa Cruz From the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean to views of the Golden Gate Bridge, these are world-class locations for stunning photography.
