As a St. Louis family photographer, I split my calendar in a pretty unusual way: half the year I’m here in the St. Louis metro, and the other half I’m back in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Nightingale Photography got its start. Twice the seasons, twice the light, twice the fun — and I get to bring 20+ years of experience to families on both coasts of my life.

I’ve been a professional photographer for over 30 years, and my path here started in a newsroom, not a studio. I spent 15 years as a staff photojournalist at the San Francisco Chronicle, which is where my style was really forged — I don’t pose families into stiff, camera-ready smiles. I chase the real moment: the belly laugh, the piggyback ride, the toddler who won’t sit still. No studio, no fake smiles — just you. I show up to help with wardrobe questions, scout the light, and then get out of the way so your family can actually be a family in front of the camera. In more than two decades of doing this, I’ve seen every mood a toddler can throw at a session, and none of it rattles me. The frames people end up loving most are almost always the ones nobody posed for.
Life Between Two Homes
Being a part-time St. Louis family photographer means my life here is full in a very specific way. My daughter and son-in-law live nearby with their two dogs, Gus and Kima, and our terrier mix, Ernie, has officially joined their pack. It’s been a whole personality shift for him — he’s somehow both terrified of Kima and a total tyrant to poor little Gus — but the playdates happen constantly and we’re all settling in. Half my year, my whole family (four-legged members included) is right here in the St. Louis area, and it’s become just as much home as the Bay Area ever was.
