5 Tips for Keeping Family Portraits Candid and Effortless

Ready for effortless and candid family photos? Let’s do this! You know it’s time for updated family portraits, but are dreading the planning, coordination, and possible meltdowns. I understand. In the past, you might have had a bad experience, but let’s reset this year and have fun while we capture memories you will cherish forever.

Ready?

Tip #1: Lose the expectation of perfection. Life isn’t perfect, nor are families or kids. Forget about it! Those stiff-posed photos are a thing of the past. In reality, just being who you are is exactly what is needed to get the best photos of your family.  The most beautiful and memorable photos come when everyone feels like being who they are is enough. Connecting with each other through play and movement offers great opportunities for fabulous portraits and allows for true personalities to shine.

Tip #2: Plan ahead

Schedule your photo session at a time that is good for everyone (including working around nap times, if necessary). I really love when families take off an entire day for this very special experience. Give yourself two weeks before to plan outfits, iron and clean them, get haircuts, and the like. And, If you have a messy preschooler or a baby prone to spit-up or drool, consider bringing an outfit change or two just in case.

Tip #3: Have Everyone Eat Before the Photo Shoot

Eat! Know anyone who gets hangry? I do! Make sure everyone (including grown-ups) eats before the session to keep blood sugar steady and everyone has energy. Sometimes I recommend a small sip of juice if a small one is sleepy just to raise the mood. If your kid likes to snack, bring along animal crackers that are tasty but won’t stain the mouth. It’s also helpful to keep some water on hand during the photoshoot in case someone gets thirsty.

You will never regret taking the time to take candid family photos. I would love to chat with you about your vision, so please contact me soon! Christina
