East Bay Beach Portraits

These East Bay beach portraits feature one of my best friend’s kids. This is the first time I photographed little, Nilah, and boy, I think these images truly capture her personality. I wanted to photograph the siblings on the beach because I really wanted Nilah in a bikini to celebrate her fabulous toddler rolls. What could be cuter? Rocco is a wonderful big brother and both gave her space to have her personal glamor shoot and was also helpful and interactive. I’m glad he wore a stylish fedora to create visual interest in the images. This sandy setting allowed for authentic moments to happen and allow us to capture a true Bay Area experience this family will remember fondly. We are so fortunate to have access to beachitul beaches near us: Baker Beach, Crissy Field, Pacifica, Santa Cruz and Alameda. Below you will find some tips to make your beach session a great one:

  • Timing is everything. I enjoy photographing at the beach in the hour or two before sunset. The lighting at this time is gorgeous and you don’t have to fight that harsh overhead lighting.
  • Feel free to bring along any props that you feel may add to your portrait session, such as a giant seashell, toy sailboat, beach ball, etc. I love hats, retro bathing suits, shovels and bucketsas well as colorful beach balls.
  • As always, make sure everyone is well fed and hydrated prior to arrival. Consider bringing some animal crackers and juice to keep the kiddos happy.
  • Bring a small towel for brushing off sand or dirt.  Larger towel for wet children or dogs that can’t resist running into the waves!
  • Wind can be a factor, so come prepared – bring a hairbrush and hair ties in case long hair needs to be pulled back.
  • As long as everyone is snuggled up together and is happy, that’s a successful portrait! Interact as a family. Give cuddles and tickles, tell jokes, just have fun! It should not be stressful – it’s the beach!

I can’t wait to capture YOUR family making memories at the beach!
